Proper tire storage is essential for maintaining your tires between seasons. When tires sit unused for months, they face risks from UV exposure, temperature fluctuations, and environmental contaminants. Taking a few simple steps during storage will extend the life of your tires and keep them ready for next season.

Clean Your Tires Before Storing

Start by thoroughly cleaning your tires with soap and water. Remove all dirt, brake dust, and road salt. Salt is particularly damaging to rubber compounds and can cause cracking and deterioration over months of storage. Dry the tires completely with a soft cloth before putting them away. This simple step prevents moisture from causing premature wear.

Choose the Right Storage Location

Store tires in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. UV rays degrade rubber, leading to cracking and reduced performance. Avoid areas with extreme temperature swings, such as unheated garages in winter or hot attics in summer. A climate-controlled basement or interior closet is ideal. Keep tires away from sources of ozone, such as electric motors or furnaces.

Stack or Store Vertically

For long-term storage, stand tires upright rather than stacking them. This distributes weight evenly and prevents flat spots from forming on the tire surface. If stacking is necessary, keep stacks to a maximum of four tires high to avoid pressure damage on the bottom tires. Rotate the stack halfway through the storage period if possible.

Investing in a tire rack organizes your storage space and protects tires from damage. Alternatively, store each tire in a heavy-duty plastic bag to shield it from dust and dirt. Label each bag with the tire size and position so you know exactly where each tire belongs when reinstalling them.
